Although one of the more arid of the various karoo areas in South Africa, the quarz-gravel soil support a extraordinary number of plant species like these bushes ( or 'Bossies' in Afrikaans ). The Roggeveld Plateau, that extends eastward on the mountains in the background has a slightly diffirent eco-system.
