An example of a masonry blockhouse built by the British Army Royal Engineers, during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) - now called South African War at Burgersdorp. The blockhouses were meant to guard the rail line and bridge and impede the movements of Boer commandos. The town of Burgersdorp boasts two such forts.
