Built by the British Royal Engineers, this blockhouse dating from the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) - now called South African War - was meant to guard the rail line and bridge at Burgersdorp in the erstwhile Cape Colony. Parties of Boer commandos often launched attacks on the railway line from the Free State which was at war with Britain. The town boasts two such forts. The concrete staircase was added during renovations.
