First light rakes across the foothills of the Roggeveld Mountain Range from the Ouberg Pass. 'Ouberg' is Afrikaans for 'Old Mountain'. In earlier years this pass was used by farmers and salesmen to connect the hinterland town of Sutherland to the larger commercial centres like Ceres and Worcester. Sutherland has the reputation of being the coldest town in South Africa. The sheep farmers used this pass to herd their sheep to warmer pastures during the winter months.
