Gamkaskloof ( also know as 'The Hel' ) is an isolated valley in the Swartberg Mountains near Prince Albert. Discovered and settled by pioneers in 1830, this small community grew vegetables and fruit and lived in almost total isolation for over 100 years. The last remaining farmer sold out to Cape Nature in 1991 and the area was declared a national monument in 1997. A rough pass now connects the valley to the outside world.
