Large repair and maintenance sheds of the South African Railways now lie abandoned behind the main station complex in De Aar. This town is still an important rail junction, although its glory days have long since faded since the reduction of rail traffic in South Africa, leading to an overall decline in the rail system, which has, in turn, led to the decline of many small towns along the rails.
