The Gariep Dam is the largest storage reservoir in South Africa. Its primary purpose is for irrigation, domestic and industrial use as well as for power generation for Eskom. It is situated ( 30° 37' " South & 25° 30' " East ) along the Orange River near the village of Norvelspont. It was built in 1971 and has a wall height of 88 meters and lenght of 914 meters. 'Gariep' means'Great Water' in the ancient San ( Bushmen ) language.
