The imposing, fort-like Alte Kaserne in Swakopmund was built in 1906 by the railway company, and now houses the International Youth Hostel. The citizen town was founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South-West Africa. Today it has been described as more German than Germany: It brims with picturesque historic buildings like "Alte Kaserne" (Old Barracks)
