The main railway line between Johannesburg and Cape Town crosses the Orange River at Norvalspont. This is near the large reservoir wall of the Gariep, the largest man made dam in South Africa. Its original name was the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam. Norvalspont is known for its British Concentration camp during the Anglo-Boer war of 1899 to 1902. Many Boer woman and children died here during this conflict. GPS = 30° 13' " South & 23° 27' " east. Lies at 1208 metres elevation.
