The Sunshine Coast at Kenton-on-Sea, South Africa, looking east across the subtropical waters of the Indian Ocean
The subtropical waters of the Indian Ocean seem calm and inviting to the modern tourist, yet the remote south coast of the African Continent was a dangerous sea passage to European ocean explorers. Caught in a storm and shipwrecked at Kenton, survivors had the unlikely choice of walking the 500 miles (800 km) to Cape Town and the hope of passage home. European-derived surnames and blue eyes in the local Xhosa population are signs of shipwrecked sailors accepting their lot in life, gathering a few cattle and buying a Xhosa wife.
