The basic wood growth rationale for these stocking levels is that the stands of released trees remain open and growing at an acceptable rate, without incurring the expense of a second precommercial thinning, until the stand averages 10 inches in and a commercial thinning is possible (fig. 5). Fewer, but larger, trees are produced since all growth follow- ing the precommercial thinning accrues on stems that will be commercially harvested, except for a small amount of mortality.
