First run in 1863 the race, or match, is regarded as the longest running contest of its kind in the world and is competed by Thames Sailing Barges of the design which have remained little changed since that time. Though older, the America's Cup has developed. The loose start took place at 08:00 in the Lower Hope Reach of the Thames off the Stanford-le-Hope riverbank. The race will proceed down river out into the Essex/Kent Estuary, before returning to the finish line off Gravesend, a distance of 43 nautical miles. Sailing away towards the horizon
