China: Empress Empress Xiao Zhen Chun (-1518), consort of the 9th Ming Emperor Chenghua (r. 1464-1487). Hanging scroll painting, 15th-17th century. Empress Wang (-1518), formally Empress Xiaozhenchun, was the consort of the Chengua Emperor. The emperor's second empress, she rose to the position after her predecessor had been deposed at the orders of the emperor's favourite concubine, Consort Wan. Desperate to avoid the same fate, she kept a low profile and avoided conflict with Consort Wan, deliberately staying childless due to Consort Wan's forced abortions and murders of pregnant consorts.
