Atomic force micrograph at atomic scale of a piece of glass which has been coated with a mono- molecular layer of silane. The blue areas represent the silane coating, whilst the green areas are the glass substrate. Each of the tiny bumps in the coating surface represents a single silane molecule. Silane (formula SiH4) is a pseudo-organic silicon compound, analagous to methane (CH4). The silane coating imparts water- repellant properties to the glass surface, and may thus be of use in the manufacture of window glass and vehicle windscreens. Magnification unknown.
