Through the Arched Entrance at Bayards Cove Fort: Detailed View of Cobbled Quay, River Dart and Riverside Houses; Dartmouth.

Riverside view looking through the arched entrance from the interior of Bayards Cove fort Dartmouth, Devon. Beyond the time worn steps and detail of the historic fortified wall can be seen the famous old cobbled Quay. Next to this is the slipway for the lower ferry, riverside houses and a glimpse of the River Dart. Bayard's Cove fort was built at the narrowest part of the River Dart estuary in 1534 to protect the busy port. At ground level are a series of gun ports with commanding views which can be explored today. There would have been steps to an upper walk way, a view point and location to fire muskets at potential marauders. This historic waterfront setting is a very popular location for film makers. Views along this West Country estuary are stunning and can be best viewed from the river.
