Loening amphibian biplane. This is a US Navy Loening OL-1A model of. The Loening OL series of amphibian biplanes started in 1923. It normally seated a crew of two, though some naval versions had a third cockpit. It landed on a large single hull of Duralumin wrapped around a wooden frame, with stabilising floats on the wings. Two forward wheels and a tailskid were used on land. It was produced by Loening Aeronautical Engineering Corporation, founded in 1917 by US aircraft manufacturer Grover Loening (1888-1976). This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
