Artificial shoulder joint. Computer illustration of a prosthetic implant used in a total shoulder replacement to replace the damaged shoulder (glenohumeral) joint. The shoulder joint is a classic 'ball and socket' (spheroidal) joint. The prosthesis consists of a shaft (left) embedded in the humerus (upper arm bone) and a dome-shaped implant (top right) that replaces the worn glenoid cavity ('socket') of the scapula (shoulder blade).
