Volta's 'Crown of Cups' battery. Historical illustration of a version of the 'Crown of Cups' battery described in 1800 by Italian physicist Alessandro Volta (1745-1827). This device consists of a series of containers (cells) holding brine and electrodes consisting of plates of zinc (Z) and copper (C, sometimes silver). Metal hoops (A) connect the cells in a series. When the ends are connected (centre), electricity flows. The 'pile' version of his battery is a stack of alternating discs of zinc and copper immersed in an electrolyte.
