Roswell Dwight7 Hitchcock D. D., D., (Boswelle, Samuel,5, Samuel4, John3, John2, Luke1) sonof Roswell and Betsej7(Longfellow) Hitchcock, was born at East Machias, Me., Aug. 15,1817. He joined the Sophomore class at Amherst College in 1833and graduated in 1836, entered Andover Theological Seminary in1838, was tutor at Amherst 1839—42, preached one year at Water-ville, Me., was installed pastor of the Congregational church atExeter, N. H., Nov. 19, 1845. In 1852 he was chosen Collins Pro-fessor of Natural and Revealed Religion at Bowdoin College and in1855 Washburne Professor of Church History in Union TheologicalSeminary, N. Y.
