Hardy Monument, to Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy on Blackdown Hill, Dorset, 20th century. Erected in 1844 by public subscription to the memory of Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy, a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar (1769-1839). Used as a landmark for shipping, the monument has shown on navigational charts since 1846 and is visible from a distance of 100 kilometres.
