Tencardiwm.—The pericardium is a fibro-serous membrane like thedura mater, and resembles that membrane in deriving its serous layerfrom the reflected serous membrane of the viscus which it consists, therefore, of two layers, an external fibrous and an internalserous. The fibrous layer is attached, above, to the great vesselsproceeding from the heart, on which it is continuous with the thoracicfascia; and below, to the tendinous portion of the diaphragm. Theserous membrane invests the heart with the commencement of itsgreat vessels as high as the arch of the aorta, and is then reflectedupon the internal surface of the fibrous layer. The Heart is placed obliquely in the chest, the base beingdirected upwards and backwards towards the right shoulder; the apexforwards and to the left, pointing to the space between the fifth and Fig. 178*. * The anatomy of the heart. 1. The right auricle. 2. The entrance of thesuperior vena cava. 3. The entrance of the inferior cava. 4. The openingof the coronary vein, half closed by the coronary valve. 5. The Eustachianvalve. 6. The fossa ovalis, surrounded by the annulus ovalis. 7. The tuber-culum Loweii. 8. The musculi pectinati in the appendix auriculae. 9. Theauriculo-ventricular opening. 10. The cavity of the right ventricle. 11. Thetricuspid valve, attached by the chordse tendineae to the carnese columnse (12).13. The pulmonary artery, guarded at its commencement by three semilunarvalves. 14. The right puhnonary artery, passing beneath the arch and behindthe ascending aorta. 15. The left pulmonary artery, crossing in front of thedescending aorta. * The remains of the ductus arteriosus, acting as a ligamentbetween the pvilmonary artery and arch of the aorta.
