Captain John Allen Midgett. Captain John Allen Midgett, Keeper of Coast Guard Lifeboat Station No. 179, , during World War I, led a boat crew to the assistance of survivors of the British tanker Mirlo, torpedoed by a German submarine off the coast of North Carolina. The tanker was carrying a cargo of gasoline and refined oil from New Orleans to Norfolk, when the attack occurred five miles off shore or the Coast Guard Station causing a tremendous explosion and fire. The Master of the tanker and sixteen men were met by Midgett as he and his boat crew rowed toward the tanker. They made it to shore without help.
