We will becomebetter acquainted with an important period of our his-tory and learn to understand better than some of usnow do the feelings of the Southern people just beforeand during the Civil Leland Stanford 120 LELAND STANFORD 1824-1893 Leland Stanford is an excellent example of what canbe accomplished by persistent effort. With no opportunitiesin early life beyond what most boys may have, he made him-self one of the leaders in the development of our countryand its resources. The Stanfords are of English extraction. One of thefamily settled in the Mohawk Valley as early as 1720, andfrom him Leland Stanford was descended. Lelands fatherwas a native of Massachusetts, but came to New York whenhe was a boy. Leland was born at WatervHet, New York,March 9, 1824. His father was an influential farmer, wellread for the times and interested in the welfare of schoolsand churches. Lelands mother was a woman of good judg-ment, strong convictions, and very fond of her children, ofwhom there were eight, seven sons and one daughter. Leland, the fourth son, was a good worker on the farm,though he loved books better than farming. He was ener-getic, quick-witte
