A series of photographs taken in St Helier Jersey ,The Channel Islands UK United Kingdom GB Great Britain

Jersey's town centre and the home of the island's government, the States Assembly. The Royal Square has witnessed many important events in the island's history. The site of the Battle of Jersey in 1781 and Major Pierson's death defending the island from invasion by the French, shot fired during the battle is still embedded in the walls of the granite buildings surrounding the square. It was from the balcony of the States chambers that Sir Alexander Coutanche, the island's wartime Bailiff, informed islanders in 1940 that they were to be occupied by German forces and five years later that the island had been liberated. The gold statue in the centre of the square is of George II.
