Murder of Prince Arthur, 1203 (1905). Artist: Unknown.
Murder of Prince Arthur, 1203 (1905). A grandson of Henry II of England, Arthur, Duke of Brittany was designated heir to the English throne by King Richard I in preference to Richard's brother, John. However, on his deathbed, Richard changed his mind due to the youth of Arthur at the time. Arthur was imprisoned by John in Rouen Castle, and disappeared in April 1203, possibly murdered either by John personally or on his orders. From Cassell's Illustrated History of England, Vol. I.
