San Rafael del Puente Romano. Statue, sculpture of St Raphael on the Roman Bridge in Córdoba, Andalucía Spain. The Archangel Saint Raphael is the custodian, protector and patron saint of Cordoba. There are ten devotional statues (called Triumphs of Saint Raphael) around the city. This is the oldest one. In the middle of the XVII Century the plague pandemic came to Cordoba. According to tradition, San Rafael appeared in a dream to padre Andrés de las Roelas giving him the message that he would save Córdoba. When the plague ended, an image of Saint Raphael was put on the bridge in 1651, by Bernabé del Rio, supported by Juan Bautista Caballero. Pope Pius X acknowledged the apparitions. There is a text on the marble plaque that can be read (in this image): "A mayor gloria de Dios y culto de nuestro Santo Custodio, el gremio de curtidores y fabricantes de guantes renovó ésta santa imagen… septiembre 10 del año 1789 (to the glory of God and cult to our Saint Custody, the handcrafters of gloves renewed this september 1789). This statue is very close to the devout Cordovan people and there are always red votive candles burning. St. Raphael is accounted patron of travelers, bullfighters, the blind, happy meetings, nurses, physicians, Christian marriage, Catholic studies and defender of adolescent chastity.
