This gilded Baroque monument to brave Dutch naval hero Cornelis Janszoon de Haan (1580-1633), known as Haantje or Rooster, includes an oil painting depicting the sea battle against Dunkirk privateers in which he lost his life: Oude Kerk (Old Church), Ouderkerksplein, Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands.

Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands: the 1633 sea battle against Dunkirk privateers which cost Dutch naval hero Cornelis Janszoon de Haan his life is depicted in an oil painting below the Latin epitaph on his gilded Baroque memorial in the city’s Oude Kerk (Old Church) in Ouderkerksplein. Cornelis de Haan, a courageous ship’s captain known as ‘Haantje’ (Rooster) was born in Amsterdam in 1580. He was killed on 19 April 1633 as his lone vessel engaged in an apparently unequal contest against two ships manned by privateers or legalised pirates. Despite being outnumbered, de Haan’s crew were victorious; the painting shows one of the badly damaged Dunkirk vessels starting to sink as his ship rakes it with cannon fire. The de Haan monument is among several memorials in the church to naval commanders from the Dutch Golden Age, the period in the history of the Netherlands that roughly spanned the era from 1588 (the birth of the Dutch Republic) to 1672, in which Dutch trade, science, art and the Dutch military were regarded as the best in Europe. The mainly-14th century Oude Kerk, in Ouderkerksplein, is the oldest building in Amsterdam. It was a Roman Catholic church until 1578, but gained a Calvinist congregation following the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule and the Protestant Reformation. It is now a museum of architecture and art, but it still hosts a Protestant Sunday service.
