William I at Hastings. By Henry Justice Ford (1860-1941). The Battle of Hastings was fought on 14th October 1066 between the Norman-French army of William the Conqueror and an English army under the Anglo-Saxon King Harold Godwinson. It was a decisive Norman victory and began the Norman conquest of England. Harold died on the battlefield.
