Hand-made marble carved lintels at the frontages of traditional houses in Pyrgos village, Tinos island, Cyclades, Greece

Pyrgos, called also the "hand-made village", is one of the biggest villages of Tinos island and one of the oldest ones. It owes its name to an old Venetian castle (pyrgos in Greek)which existed in the area. Listed as traditional settlement and renowned for its long tradition in marble-curving, is considered to be the most important centre of marble crafts in Modern Greece. According to tradition, Fidias, the outstanding sculpture or antiquity, was the one who taught this art to locals. Their amazing skillfulness is displayed on marble lintels over doors and windows, on steeples, decorates buildings' facades, fountains and pigeon lofts. Homeland to some of the greatest modern Greek artists of painting and marble-carving such as Gyzis, Vidalis, Lytras, Chalepas, Filipotis, Gaitis, Sochos and many others, Tinos has supported this tradition having the Art School for Marble Sculpture started running since 1955. In the village of Pyrgos the Museum of Marble crafts presenting the technology and art of marble is worth visiting, as well as the Tinian Artists' Gallery. It is the unique Tinos marble, white or green, that continues to be one of the first choices for the lining of monuments and architectural projects. Thus, it isn't surprising that it was used at the Buckingham Palace and the Louvre.
