Narrow gauge cog railway in Upper Austria leading from Sankt Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee up to the Schafberg. The track

Schafberg mountain, Salzburg (1,782 m), characteristic mountain of the Salzkammergut district, called "Austrian Rigi", with vertical precipices located on the north side, on the border between Salzburg and Upper Austria. The Schafberg is an imposing and isolated limestone mountain situated between Lakes Wolfgangsee, Mondsee and Attersee with a far-reaching view of the Salzkammergut district extending to the Dachstein massif; rack railway from St. Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut to the summit; Himmelspfort mountain refuge, hotel on the peak. History of the SchafbergBahn At the beginning of the 19th century, before the railway to the Schafberg was built, the rich and noble people let themselves be carried up to the top of the mountain by the socalled "armchair carriers". From recordings we know that the occupation of the "armchair carrier" was developed very early in St. Wolfgang. It was a professional association, approved by the citizenry, with fixed tariffs, fixed locations and fixed rules for the security of the persons which were carried up to the top of the mountain. The number of "armchair carriers" of St. Wolfgang amounted approximately 30 men. When the weather was good the "armchair carriers" had to start the trip in the early morning hours, in order to make it to the summit of the 1783 m high mountain with sunrise. Provisions and rain protection had to be carried as well by the mostly young "armchair carriers". Since 1836 there is a protection hut, which made mounting with overnight accomodation still more romantic on the Schafberg. In April 1892 the laboriously construction of the SchafbergBahn began. This was the end for the "armchair carriers". About 350 foreign workers from italy were employed at the SchafbergBahn construction site. The Company Stern & Hafferl did a great job by building the 5,85 km long course route within one year. Every year the SchafbergBahn carries thousands of people from all countries up to the top of the Schafberg. The difference
