During the Civil War, the USS St. Louis crossed the Atlantic Ocean and patrolled the coast of Africa, the Canary Islands, and the Azors in search of Confederate ships. She used Lisbon and Cadiz as a base of operations before being sent to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron in 1864. See 'Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, Vol VI, p. 243-44 (online). This photograph was found in a St. Louis Public Library scrapbook called 'O'Fallon Polytecnic Institute, Mr. Babcock, 1863' and removed in 1974. It was donated to the Missouri History Museum in 1985.
