Nephrosclerosis in human kidney, light micrograph. Nephrosclerosis is a renal pathology characterised by sclerosis of renal arterioles and small arteries, strongly associated with hypertension. The affected vessels have thickened walls and consequently narrowed lumens, changes that result in focal parenchymal ischemia leading to secondary glomerulosclerosis and chronic tubulointerstitial injury. The micrograph shows three thickened small arteries, a sclerosed glomeruli (top centre) and many injured renal tubuli.
