The Old Palace, portions of which dated as far back as the time of Edward Confessor, and contained within its walls several magnificent appartments, such as Westminster Hall, happily, still surviving, St. Stephen's Chapel, the crypt only of which remains, the cloisters still intact, and several other large Halls, such as the white Hall or Court Of Requests, the Old Hall or House of Lords, the Painted Chamber, the Prince's Chamber, and the Court of Exchequer. The Palace was inhabited by the Court until Henry the VI Il. reign, when, with the exception of occasional visits from Elizabeth, the Court* finally removed to Whitehall, and the Palace was wholly given up to Parliament. It was finally burnt down in 1834, and those portions which fortunately escaped the flames, were incorporated in the New Building designed by Sir Charles Barry, one Of the finest buildings in the world, the cost Of which was over 13,000,000. Admission is easily obtained while Parliament is not sitting, by an order from the Lord Chamberlain's Office within the building, but during the actual session, only to the Strangers Galleries by order, either from a peer to the one, or from a member for the other "
