In SouthAustralia no minimum vote was required, but most ofthe Colonies passed practically the same Bill as Xew 34 FROM COLONY TO COMMONWEALTH. South Wales. Queensland and Westralia hesitated,and finally the Bill was lost in Queensland, and theWestralians only gave a kind of half-hearted support toit, and so the matter lingered. In the meantime a great Convention was held inBathurst in November, 1896, that showed the spirit ofthe people. The Convention numbered about 200representatives, mostly from New^ South Wales, and, byconsent, the Commonwealth Bill of 1891 was accepted as. The outcome of that Conventionwas the development of a strong, popular federal spirit,that prepared the way for the election which was to takeplace on March 4th, 1897. In New South Wales there were 49 candidates,including Cardinal Moran (the Roman Catholic Arch-bishop of Sydney), 10 Labour members, and a FROM COLONY TO COMMONWEALTH. 35 bunch of five Prudent Federalists. Each voter had lovotes, and 148,000 voted out of a total of 264,000 on theroll. The candidates selected were :— Mr. Edmund Barton, ; Hon. G. H. (Premier); Hon. j7 H.
