Dr. Dettweiler's glass and pewter sputum flask for tuberculosis sufferers, circa 1870. Sputum flasks began to be used by tuberculosis sufferers when it was discovered that the infectious nature of spit was what caused other people to become infected. The simplest solution was to contain the sputum in a flask which could be emptied periodically. The characteristic blue glass flask was know as a 'blue henry'.
