The Kearsley Spur is a short section of motorway between the adjoining A666 at the Kearsley roundabout (or interchange) and the M61 to the west and M60 to the east. While the A666 southbound from Bolton becomes motorway at the Kearsley roundabout and is indeed signed M61, older maps show this short stretch of motorway between this and the M60/M61 proper as A666(M). Despite this, modern maps and signage do not reference the A666(M) and instead label the entire stretch as M61. See pathetic motorways for more info on this "secretive" motorway.
