Picture by Roger Bamber: 22 Jan 2003: A £3 million refurbishment of the Royal Albert Bridge over the Tamar will restore Isambard Kingdom Brunel's original hardwood timber trackbase, originally used from construction in1859 until the 1920s. Engineers found modern sleepers and ballast trackbeds cause more metal fatigue to the structure. The bridge links Devon and Cornwall. Pictures shows a Road/Rail crane laying new track on the Ekki Hardwood on the bridge.
