Overlooking the marina with over 450 moorings along the sea front from the Calvi Citedal, built by the Genoese who invaded Corsica from Italy in the thirteenth century and remained here for four hundred years. Corsica is a French island off the south coast of France in the Mediterranean. It is the birthplace of two famous men – Christopher Columbus was born in 1436 in the citadel that dominates the town's skyline. The other is Napoleon Bonaparte who was born on the island. The citadel was built by the Genoese who invaded Corsica from Italy in the thirteenth century and remained here for over four hundred years. Napoleon Bonaparte’s godfather, Laurent Giubega who lived in the citadel, helped Napoleon and his family to flee to France. English Admiral Nelson lost his eye in the 18-day battle when he besieged Calvi in 1794.
