GEORGE GRISWOLD CiRKENE, Lawyer,was born in Brocketts Bridge, Herkimercounty New York, November 18, 1843, son ofNathan G. and Elizabeth Munson (Griswold)Greene. He attended in boyhood tlie commonschools of his native town, and later the Illinois 364 UNIVERSITIES AND THEIR SONS Military Academy at Fulton, Illinois, graduating in1865. He studied law for some time in the officesof Keys & Hastings at Madison, Wisconsin, andwith Ellis & Hastings at Green Ray, Wisconsin,. GEO. G. GREENE and then entered Columbia Law School, graduatingwith the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1869. Hewas admitted to the Wisconsin Bar the same year,and became a member of the firm of Ellis, Hast-ings & Greene at Greene Bay, and so continueduntil , when the senior partner was electedCircuit Judge. For the next two years the firm wasHastings & Greene, but in 1884 the bench againclaimed a member of the firm, Mr. Hastings hav-ing been elected as Circuit Judge. After severalchanges the firm is now doing an extensive businessunder the name of Greene, Vroman, Fairchild,North & Parker. Mr. Greene is a Republican inpolitics, but has never held an elective office. In1893 he declined the nomination of the State BarConvention for Judge of the Supreme Court, andhas declined an appointment to tlie same office bytwo successiv
