Muscle wasting in carpal tunnel syndrome. Close-up of the hand of a 77-year-old male patient with wasting (atrophy) of the thenar eminence palm muscles due to severe carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). CTS is a compression of the median nerve through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. There is no clear cause but it appears to be the result of various genetic and environmental factors. It can cause paresthesia, pain, numbness, and other symptoms in the distribution of the median nerve. Aside from heavy repetitive work and or work with vibrating tools, other predisposing factors include: diabetes, obesity, pregnancy and hyperthyroidism.
