A treatise on orthopedic surgery . d, interferes seri-ously with locomotion. Adductionis more important than abduction, because the loss of power to turnthe foot inward induces the atti-tude of valgus, which is more dis-abling and more difficult to remedythan the opposite deformity. Tothe importance of these movementsthe power of the muscles ^ Selection of Muscles.— In selectingmuscles for transplantation one at-tempts usually to reduce the distort-ing power as well as to replace lostfunction. For example, if the tibi-alis anticus were paralyzed onewould naturally replace it by itsadjunct, the extensor hallucis. Thismight complete the operation, orthe peroneus tertius, the most directabductor on the dorsal surface ofthe foot, might be divided and theproximal end attached to the peri-osteum near the centre of the foot, or the peroneus brevis maybe changed from a direct to an indirect abductor by dividingit and sewing it to the longus to further assure the success of theoperation. ^ See tables ou page Tendons in the right sole.(Testut from Gerrishs Anat-omy. ) 874 OETHOPEDIC SUSGEEY. If, on the other hand, the dorsal abductors were reduced instrength so that the foot turned inward in dorsiflexion. thetibialis anticus tendon should be split, from its insertion to themuscular substance, and the outer half carried over the othertendons and fastened securely at or near the insertion of theperoneus tertius as well as to that tendon; thus the power ofadduction would be weakened and that of abduction increased.
