The planing-mill was purchased as the nucleusof the car-works, and work upon the erection of thelatter at once begun. They were constructed of brick,and supplied with perfect appointments, at an aggre-gate cost of about eighty thousand dollars. Thewater-power was ultimately donated to the companyby Mr. Bush, and in addition to that gift the peopleof Bellefonte gave the company a bonus of ten thou-sand dollars in money. John McClellan was engagedas superintendent of the works, and active operations,with a force of about forty men, begun in the fall of1873. Before work was fairly under way financial andbusiness depression overtook the country, and affectedthe progress of the car-works at Bellefonte to such anextent that there was a
