"The Whites" are a mountain range covering approximately a quarter of Northern New Hampshire and Western Maine. The Whites cover part of the northern Appalachian Mountains, the most rugged mountains in all of New England. Most of this land is public and MT Washington is the highest peak in the Northeastern USA. MT Washington is a part of the Presidential Range which is a line of summits named for US Presidents. Hiking and camping are fabulous here. A system of alpine huts cover a section of the 4,000 footers, peaks that exceed at least 4,000 feet in elevation. Reservations for overnights are sometime booked a year in advance.
