The power is furnished bythe two weights shown, one on each side, ropes from which are carried to and are woundaround two drums,which form part ofclockw^ork mechan-ism, with pallet wheeland escapement. Im-mediately below thewheels attached to thepower drums are pin-ions wuth square-headed shafts, o nwhich handles can beplaced, and which areused to wind up theweights. The frame which carries the two pawls engaging the scapewheel is pivoted directly in a vertical line above the axle of the scapewheel, and as tooth after tooth of the wheel passes a pawl the framerocks like the walking beam of a steam MOTION AND CONTROLLING DEVICES, ETC. 255
