Shipworms damaging dike revetments, illustration

18th century illustration showing people inspecting damage to dike revetments caused by shipworms (Teredo navalis) in the Netherlands. Three of these shipworms are seen in the foreground. Shipworms are marine bivalve molluscs that can live and bore into submerged timber. In the early 1730s, shipworms caused great damage to Dutch dikes and ships. Timber sea dike faces had to be replaced with stone. Print by Dutch artist Abraham Zeeman c. 1731-1735.
