Edwight, West Virginia - An aerial view of Massey Energy's Shumate coal sludge impoundement, which stores billions of gallons of waste behind an earthen dam. Below the dam is Massey's Goals coal processing plant, and at bottom the Marsh Fork Elementary School. Frequest health problems have been reported among children attending the school, most likely due to toxic chemicals from the coal preparation plant. Residents are also concerned about the possible failure of the dam, which would send a tidal wave of sludge over the school and through downstream communities.
