Welsh Highland Railway, Wales. Driver standing on the footplate of a 1958 narrow gauge Beyer, Peacock and Company built steam locomotive at Caernarfon Station. Locomotive number 143 was the last steam train to be built by the English company Beyer, Peacock and Company. The Welsh Highland Railway (WHR) runs a scheduled timetable on a twenty five mile route between Porthmadog and Caernarfon. Prior to its amalgamation to the WHR for primarily leisure and tourism purposes, the original use of the narrow gauge railway lines was the transportation of slate from the slate mines. The WHR is owned and managed by the Ffestiniog Railway Company which is believed to be the oldest surviving railway company in the world.
