The initial stone removedfrom the old house at Cow-wells has been built into theembankment wall close by, and contains the letters T. S., andthe date 1620. For upwards of a century this house was occupied bya family named Smithies. The initial S., however, hadreference to the owner named Sugden, as is borne out by anindenture dated May 3, 1697, reciting that whereas RobertSugden, of Horton, by his will dated November 9, 1686, Ra/ub/cs Round Hart on. 175.
