An old engraving of a Victorian ‘road locomotive’ made by Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies of Ipswich, Suffolk, England, UK. It is from a mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This ‘self-moving engine’ is a lightweight version as road locomotives were designed for heavy haulage on the public roads. They were usually larger than the normal traction engine and were fitted with three-speed gearing. They were also sprung on both front and rear axles. An extra water tank was fitted under the boiler so that greater distances could be travelled. They could pull loads of up to 120 tons.

An extra water tank was fitted under the boiler so that greater distances could be travelled between water stops. They could pull loads of up to 120 tons. From their base, Orwell Works, set up in 1845, Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies Limited was a major British agricultural machinery maker also producing a wide range of general engineering products including traction engines, trolleybuses, ploughs, lawn mowers, combine harvesters and other tilling equipment. They manufactured aeroplanes during the First World War. Their base, set up in 1845, was named Orwell Works.
