Slievemish or Slemish Mountain isan enormous mass of greenstone, which also occurs in other localities. Porphyryoccupies a considerable district south of Connor and Kells, and is met in otherplaces, especially near Cushen-dall. The substance calledwood-coal occurs in thin strataat Portnoffer, Kiltymorris, Ballintoy, and elsewhere. All the other rocks of Antrim are beneath the basalticbeds in geological position. Thefirst is hard chalk, sometimescalled white limestone, whichaverages 200 feet in thicknessand occurs on the eastern and ~~ southern sides of the countyand on the southern coast of Rathlin Island. Green sandstone next occurs in ANTRIM. 131 the neighborhood of Belfast, to the north of Carrickfergus, near Larne, at GarronPoint, etc. ; and under this are found Has beds on the coast between GarronPoint and Larne. These, together with the chalk and basalt, are based uponbeds of reddish and reddish-brown sandstone of various textures, which are foundunder the entire southeastern border, in several spots along the eastern coast,and in considerable tracts from Red Bay to Ballycastle: the upper strata form amarl, in which are veins of gypsum. The coal district of Ballycastle comprisesabout two miles along the coast; the beds crop out above the level of the sea,dipping to the _ south east aboutone foot in nine, ^ ^ and alternate with sm-
